Mauro Gongora is the Coordinator of the Capture Fisheries Unit of the Belize Fisheries Department. The Capture Fisheries Unit is tasked with carrying out research, and with the collection and analysis of data in order to provide sound, robust recommendations used for informed decision making. Mauro’s main role is as the supervisor of the unit and advisor to the Fisheries Administrator. He is tasked with the review of the results of the data collection and analysis for Belize’s commercially important fisheries and is an advocate of the economic potential of the exploration of emerging non-traditional fisheries.

  • Background

Mauro has a M.Sc. degree in Aquaculture from the University of Stirling in Scotland, United Kingdom. He has worked at the Fisheries Department for over 23 years and has been crucial in the development and management of the lobster and conch fisheries. He has represented the Belize Fisheries Department in an array of local, regional and international platforms.
